With the building moving upwards and taking shape we would like to share with you some of our visions for the new centre in the next few newsletters.
One of our key visions for the new Manukau Youth and Community Centre is to open a café that not only provides great coffee and nutritious food, but doubles as a training facility. This café area aims to support healthy eating and nutritional education and offer hospitality training and work opportunities for young people and the wider Manukau community.
The new Youthline Manukau centre aims to build on the efforts of the local Manukau District Health Board and engage with the broader social and health issues of the local community through the centre’s provision of a range of health related services.
Project Coordinator Kate Duder says this model has drawn inspiration from Jamie Oliver’s ‘Ministry of Food’.
“We are taking a strengths based approach to improving the health of young people in the area and will incorporate traditional Pasifika, Maori, Asian and European food influences, to reflect the cultural diversity of South Auckland”, says Kate.
Through consultations with local youth and community groups, a number of suggestions have been made to carry this vision forward. These include:
- Educational seminars and workshops for both individuals and families in a bid to encourage healthy eating.
- Accessible information on nutrition and healthy cooking.
- The hospitality/cafe space has been designed to include a number of ‘cooking points’ so that a seminar approach to classes can be incorporated.
- The cafe will be designed with the community and the building’s history in mind, with a large communal table in the centre and vibrant multicultural art. It will also be home to ‘little flick’, a restored fire engine belonging to the Papatoetoe Volunteer Fire Brigade Old Boys Association.
-The potential for apprenticeship programmes and work experience within the kitchen and cafe for young people to gain skills and qualifications in the hospitality industry.
“This concept will give the young people of Counties Manukau the opportunity and resources to make healthy lifestyle decisions and for some, foster a future in the hospitality industry”.
